The Surprise Book Report
Updated: Apr 2, 2023
It was early morning. Still cloudy and dark outside, but in my room, the lights were on. I had already woken up for school. I was drowsy and I dragged myself out of my room, just stopping to turn off the lights when I spotted something on my wall. A yellow Post-It note. I leaned in for a closer look when I jumped. Remember to do a book report, and the post-It note read. And suddenly I remembered. I left that post-It note on my wall two days ago so I wouldn’t forget to do my book report, which was due today!
I ran downstairs and grabbed my Chromebook. I knew that I had to do my book report if I didn’t want to fail. The problem was that I had not prepared for the book report– at all. I hadn’t done any work on it either. I didn’t even know what I was going to write. All I knew was that I had to write a summary of the book our class was reading, Among the Hidden. Even though I did my best to write my book report, I knew I would not get a good grade on it. But anything was better than a fail grade. I kept on working on my book report– not even taking time to eat breakfast.
When it was time for me to go to school, even though I was disappointed in myself for forgetting, I was sure that I had finished my book report. Even though it wouldn’t be the best essay I had ever written, I was sure it would at least get a B+. But I was still worried since I didn't get Bs often. Finally, my English class came. The teacher told us he had to make an announcement. He said that since most people had not finished their essays, he was extending the due date, giving us all more time to work on it. While I was extremely happy about this, I also definitely learned the dangers of procrastination.
